In March 2016, the Third International Workshop on Participatory Surveillance (IWOPS III) was held in Australia, bringing together both established and emerging participatory surveillance systems. The workshop convened international public health practitioners in a three-day workshop to enhance collaboration, improve data sharing, and share best practices among partners in order to strengthen the field of participatory surveillance in various regions of the world. Participants shared results from resource, surveillance, and public engagement efforts connected to participatory disease surveillance systems.

The workshop provided a forum for practitioners to share best practices around self-reporting systems, methods for optimizing public engagement, data sharing and analysis, and the future of participatory surveillance with new technology. Participants from the workshop collaborated to develop a set of peer-reviewed manuscripts that will be submitted for publication in 2016.
